While Mark Bedell has always specialized in writing plays for
professionals to produce and perform FOR kids. He has on
occasion been commissioned to write shows specifically for
kids to perform for kids.
These
shows have roles that are fairly well split up so that most
kids have a good sized role. There are, however, always
one or two or three roles that are larger than the rest; but, if
you're a teacher, you know, there is always one or two or
three kids who show such an aptitude for the stage that it
would be wrong to not challenge them a bit more than the
others.
The
settings are simple enough to not be intimidating but also,
they're enough so that the whole class can get together and
have fun transforming some refrigerator boxes into something
resembling a set; and transforming construction paper into
something resembling costume pieces.
These
shows are VERY campy. This helps to "hide" the
inevitable bloopers and make them blend in. Also... it's
important to produce for your audience... your audience will
be parents, and parents LOVE camp!
